Jersey Wild Cats
Two wild cats, Cleo and Caesar, hunt throughout the village of Cranbury, avoiding human contact to navigate the challenges of suburban sprawl, commercial development, pollution, and fractured wildlife corridors that limit their access to food, water, and shelter. Despite the solitary nature of feral cats, villagers encounter them on rare occasions prowling the landscape, and later delight in reporting these sightings at a local diner where patrons compete in embellished storytelling about these remarkable felines. Soon, the cats become a celebrated curiosity for their rugged self-reliance that embodies the character of the community.
Cleo and Caesar discuss their escapades from a feline perspective, recounting Cranbury’s countryside, history, traditions, village events, and personalities during the 1950s. The cats compare civilization with life in the wild and debate the conflicts, hoping that humans will once again learn to live in harmony with nature.
A chance encounter with a young family leads the tabbies to accept their hospitality, so that Cleo can birth her kittens in a safe place. However, as the village celebrates the newborns, unintended consequences separate the kittens from their parents.
At the heart of this tragedy, an awkward child seeks the self-confidence to overcome his insecurity from growing up under the shadow of brothers who excel at everything. He hopes that adopting one of the celebrity kittens will make everything the cat’s meow, but he overlooks one crucial detail. Now he must compete with his siblings for his pet’s attention.
Jersey Wild Cats explores the experience of growing up in a rural farming village, examining the marvels of nature, the intimacy of small-town life, and the wonder of discovery that makes childhood a thrilling adventure.
